A rough day yesterday going 1-2 with an easy Xavier winner and then losses on UT Arlington and Vermont. Back on the horse today…
Vanderbilt (-5): I really like Bryce Drew as a head coach and I think he’s going to do a solid job at Vandy. Things sure didn’t work out well in his first game at his new school though. Vandy was taken to the woodshed by Marquette and lost by 24. Here is the bounce back spot and I trust that Drew will have his boys ready. I don’t expect any miracles from Drew this year in his first season on the job and realistically Vandy is an NIT or CIT type of team. That said these are the kind of games they should be able to take care of business. I know Rick Byrd has had a hell of a run at Belmont but his squad is a bit overmatched athletically in this one. Guys like Kornet and Roberson should be matchup nightmares for Belmont and both will be looking to rebound after shaky showings against Marquette.
Maryland (+6): I probably like this Maryland team more than most seem to this year. Yeah they were sloppy and lazy in their season opener against American, but I can give them a pass on that due to the fact they were most likely looking ahead to this battle with G-Town. Melo Trimble is back for the Terps and obviously he’s the guy who runs the show. He’s joined by Duquesne transfer LG Gill and what I think will turn out to be a pretty solid group of Freshman. There’s no denying this team is on the young side, but I think the talent is certainly there. On the other side we have a Georgetown team that should be improved from last years 15-18 squad. That said I feel this line is a few points too high and it’s a game I think comes down to the final minutes. I’ll happily take my chances with a half dozen points in such a game.
Also have a few more but no time for write ups on these…
